about

"In the neon off the highway..." This is a song about lame excuses for avoiding real intimacy. Written in Washington DC about a girl I was seeing and was supposed to meet one night downtown. I decided I'd walk the mile or so from my house to her apartment. Problem was, there were about 3-4 bars I visited along the way. Needless to say, I never made it and blew that budding relationship. She's now married to an old friend of mine, so this turned out just fine.

lyrics

i'm a wreck in the morning i'm awake in somebody else's bed i'm giving you a warning: i always act like this o i got detoured i lost your address i didn't have your number i didn't have a quarter* anyway my friends bought drinks and all my friends got lost in the neon off the highway in a galaxy of cars o when i get tired and i lose my way i just think about your sweet face and i wash it away well all my friends got drunk and all my friends got caught in the neon off the highway in a rosary of stars o when i get tired and i lose my way i forget about your sweet face and i wash it away...

*this tune was written back before everyone had cellphones. i'm talking pay phones here. never imagined it would be such a blatant anachronism.
