about

what to say about this one apart from the fact that--with its overt allusions to hemingway and kurt cobain-- he title is decidedly ironic. i would caution against assuming that the singer of the song is the "speaker" of the lyric, though. while all of these songs come from personal experience, not all of them are strictly autobiographical. that said, it clear i was bumming about something and it found its way into this tune.

my favorite thing about this song is the brilliant little synth solo by my pal peter fox. he improvised and nailed it on the first take. just don't ask him to do exactly the same way twice. ain't gonna happen. i'm also rather impressed by mike harvey's electric guitar solo at the end of the track. he's using a little device called an 'e-bow' that jimmy page used with led zep from time to time. it gives the guitar tremendous sustained notes and is a heck of a lot harder to manage than it looks. thanks, mike!

lyrics

there's got to be a better way to make it through these hard days hey hey is this what pappa hemingway felt or maybe kurt cobain whatcha say i'm not ready for this i can't make it without you baby i just wanna kiss i just wannna hear you say hey hey everything's ok i ain't got a shotgun no and i'm all outta pills o hey but something deep inside me thrills to make this feelin go away whatcha say are you ready for this can you make it with out me baby dontcha wanna kiss dontcha wanna hear me say hay hey everything's ok....
