about

you know what it's like when you've been watching the news for so long it gets hard to tell what to be genuinely alarmed about and what's just complete bullshit? this is, in part at least, what this one's about. i suppose. anyway...

this is another solo acoustic number. if i recall correctly, i recorded this on a digital 4 track in my cabin on the ferry from Copenhagen, Denmark to Oslo, Norway at about 2 a.m.

see, from time to time in the mid 90s, i played one-two month stints at a cool little bar on Oslo harbor waterfront. really nice scene, especially in summer. this particular time i ran into jeff buckley, whom i'd met a year or so earlier when i opened for him at the black cat in dc. i was walking one way and he was walking the other and we just ran into each other. i got to see his show that night and he did "kangaroo" by big star for me. nice memory, amazing guy. big loss... there's a first-person account of that evening on line for anyone who's interested: www.flowersintime.org/show.php?gigid=62

lyrics

my lines all got trouble my signals are crossed i can't hear you here down the wire so i'm mixing my metaphors with cuervo and limes and i'm throwing salt into the eyes of the blinded by love love you call out my name and you're gone. it's hard to be serious it's hard to be much when the sky's full of aeroplanes and radiosignals the clouds lose their meaning the stars aren't horoscopes the sun's wild pitches of light i can't say i love you i can't say you're here when you're not sleep it away sleep it away when the telephone rings don't you get up and answer it sleep it away sleep it away it's a matter of time and you're sure to forget her over and over you've thought of the moon as something too beautiful for men to go walkin' on but you saw the pictures and you read all the news 'til it gets hard to tell what's real what's ridiculous maybe i'm crazy but i don't buy into that stuff i sleep it away sleep it away when the telephone rings i don't get up and answer it i make up a lullabye get down and pray it's a matter of time...
